Tradition of Chess Tournaments at VŠFS Growing Stronger

20.04.2015

The fifth year of the Chess Tournament of secondary schools saw a record-breaking participation of 26 teams from the Czech Republic. We welcomed traditional participants (e.g. Prague Jan Neruda Grammar School) as well as novices such as VOŠ, SPŠ automobilní a technická České Budějovice. The level of the tournament was very high as usual.*

The Chess Tournament was opened by Vice-rector of the University, Petr Budinský, observance of rules was ensured by Jan Kolašín, secretary of the Chess Association of the Czech Republic. He and our pedagogue Miroslav Jurásek were also in charge of the organization of the whole tournament. The tournament followed the Swiss system of seven rounds, with the rate of rapid chess (each player was given 15 minutes for one game).

The teams at the first three positions were equally strong. The first position was won by Grammar School Brno tř. Kapitána Jaroše (the team was made up of Martin Blahynka, Adam Dvořák, Radek Zeman and Tomáš Perutka). The second position was won by Grammar School Plzeň „A“ and the third position by Grammar School Kladno. The winning teams were awarded by the representatives of our university.

Later, the winning team played a simultaneous game with M. Jurásek. The tournament confirmed the strong potential of the winning team when our pedagogue, as a very strong competitor, reversed the score to its advantage, i.e. two wins, one draw and one defeat.

The Chess Tournament of secondary schools, organized by the University of Finance and Administration, has confirmed its qualities and strengthened its tradition this year again. Congratulations to the winners and we look forward to the next year.

*The tournament was also attended by players who gain approximately 2400 rating in the Elo System (statistical assessment of the player´s or team´s performance based on the results of the games), whereas the average member of the Czech Chess club gains approximately 1500 rating.
