Dare to Dream Big — Study MBA and Start Your Journey Like Jan

27.05.2025

Jan Blahník, an MBA student at the University of Finance and Administration, decided to take the opportunity to study abroad for one trimester. In winter 2025, he travelled to our partner university, City University of Seattle. He returned to Seattle after a previous visit, but this time with the goal of experiencing life as a student in the USA. During his trip, he experienced not only a different approach to education, but also the everyday American way of life. In this interview, he shared his experiences, highlights and valuable advice for anyone considering an MBA.

Jan, what made you decide to spend part of your studies in Seattle?
I had been to Seattle before and wanted to go back. At the same time, I felt that it would be challenging and allow me to meet new people and experience a different environment, which would benefit me professionally and personally.

Even though you had visited Seattle before, what were your expectations this time?
I wanted to experience the American way of life and school system first-hand. I was curious about how education and everyday life are approached differently.

Were your expectations met?
Absolutely! The studies were very different from what I was used to, and I enjoyed them a lot. At the same time, I enjoyed experiencing the American way of life, which differs from the European way in many ways.

About life and culture in the USA, what impressed you most?
I was surprised by the level of support among the people – most Americans believe that if you have a goal, you should go for it. I was also surprised by the size of restaurant portions — they are huge yet very tasty. I also noticed that prices are not that different compared to average earnings in Washington State.

Despite your positive experience, did you have any concerns about going to Seattle?
Honestly? I was slightly concerned that I wouldn't want to come back.

Looking back—what was your best and worst experience?
I had many amazing experiences, but the one I enjoyed the most was spending a moment alone at sunset in Olympic National Park. It's rare to feel such peace in European nature. Worst experience? Honestly, I don't have one – I enjoyed every moment to the fullest.

That's great to hear. Would you recommend studying abroad to other students?
One hundred percent! It's a life-changing experience that will take you to the next level.

For those considering going to Seattle, what places would you recommend visiting?
I would highly recommend a visit to the Laser Dome at the Pacific Science Center, which hosts a laser show featuring music by Pink Floyd every Saturday. While you're there, I would also recommend taking the ferry to Whidbey Island and visiting the Yakima Valley wine region.

What type of accommodation did you choose and why?
Airbnb it was! I was determined to experience American life in the fullest and be part of everyday living outside of the typical student dorm setup.

Did CityU organize any events or workshops for students?
Yes, CityU has organised various events and business workshops. For instance, we had the opportunity to learn how Chase Bank operates.

Did you have the chance to meet any interesting people or make new friendships?
I made friends both through my accommodation and during the course. I am still in touch with many of those people today.

Finally, is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Don't be afraid to go! It's really worth it!

Honza, thank you for the interview and for sharing your impressions and valuable experiences with us. It is clear that the four months in Seattle was enriching not only professionally but also personally.
